What are penetrants for fluorescent penetrant testing?
Penetrants are special liquids that can penetrate the smallest surface defects by capillary action due to their excellent wetting properties. After a defined penetration time, the surface is cleaned without the penetrant being removed from the defects.
In fluorescent processes, the penetrants contain dyes that are made visible under UV radiation (365 nm).
The process conditions, requirements and process steps are described in various standards, e.g. DIN EN ISO 3452-2. This method of non-destructive material testing is used worldwide in safety-critical areas.
